U.S. 285 STRETCH NAMED FOR CARRTHE ASSOCIATED PRESS■■'■nil i« || l| mm |Denver • The Colorado Legislature approved a resolution Friday naming U.S. 285 from Denver to the New Mexico state line the “Ralph Carr Memorial Highway” in honor of the former Colorado governor.Carr, who was governor when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, warned others not to trample on the rights of American-born citizens simply because of their ethnicity.As a result, the Southern Colorado native killed his political career when he took the unpopular position in 1942against putting Japanese-Americans in internment camps such as Camp Amachein Southeastern Colorado.The Republican did so at a time when other governors were threatening “that there would be Japs hanging from every pine tree” if the federal government tried to relocate West Coast Japanese-Ameri-cans to their states, according to c new book, “The Principled Politician: The Ralph Carr Story, by 9News reporterAdam Schrager.To honor him, Reps. Rafael Gallegos, D-Antonito, and Rob Witwer, R-Genesee, and Sen. Josh Penry, R-Grand Junction, introduced a joint resolution to rename the highway.The resolution, which passed the House and Senate unanimously, calls for erectingtwo signs along U.S. 285 naming it after Carr, one near the New Mexico border just south of Antonito and the other where it meets W-470 in Jefferson County. It also calls for erecting a memorial plaque commemorating Carr on Kenosha Pass east of Fairplay, which is to be paid for through grants and donations.Born in Rosita, Carr was an Antonito attorney for 10 years before being picked by President Herbert Hoover in 1929 to be U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado.In 1938, he easily won the governor’s race, sending his political star rising.His internment camp stance, however, ended his career.
