How the Street Markers OriginatediBy MARY LEE NELSONPrentiss Pruitt, friendly mechanic at the local city garage on New Orleans street, said today that he thinks the idea of marking the city streets “is a mighty good thing.”The markers which have been erected on Bay street and on part of Walnut street are the direct result of a suggestion of Mr. Pruitt’s, following his visit to Mobile, Ala., about a month ago, according to a statement made by Commissioner Scott Pickel at the meeting of the Exchange club Wednesday.Mr. Pruitt, who has been a city employe since June 20, 1941, related the following history of the markers:“I happened to be riding around one Sunday in Mobile, where I’d gone to drive Mrs. Hugh Batson back to Hattiesburg. I noticed the street markers in Mobile and started studying them. I didn’t take any actual measurements but I observed them very closely and when I came back here I told Mr. Hugh Batson,our street superintendent, about them.“The reason I always look at everything about streets is that I used to be on the street maintenance -crew and that was my job then. I’m a mechanic for the city now but I still notice the streets whenever I’m driving through this town, or any other place. I’m still interested in streets., “Our streets need markers. There are now in town so many strangers * who can’t find their way around, and, too, lots of people who have lt;lived here all their lives don’t know 1 the names of plenty of streets. lt;Sometimes when they call up and 1 want to know where such-and-such J a street is, I hav% to look it up my-* 1 self.” • ■ . . iMr, Pruitt explained ^that^a total lt;of 120 concrete markers/have been lt;“poured.” Forty markers are in the current process of curing at the ' city garage.
