ASSEMBLY GLANCEInternment oppositionThe General Assembly honored former Gov. Ralph Carr on Friday for his opposition to the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II.Carr, whose two terms as governor started in 1939, publicly protested the internment policy. His political career ended when he was narrowly defeated in the U.S. Senate election of 1942.The House and Senate unanimously passed a joint resolution naming the portion of Colorado Highway 285 running from Jefferson County to the New Mexico border in his honor. Survivors from the Amache internment camp attended the ceremony in the House chamber, joined by WWII veterans of Japanese descent whovolunteered to fight despite the internment of their families.
