Szarkfc of Vmelnr.d. N. J. a Marine Corps combat photographer, who was 3^5ig^■M^ with me to cover the activities of the unit.We knew*, after the long day oi fighting, that the Jap» would come after us at night. So we had orders to stay awake. We also had orders that no one was to move cut of his foxhole for any reason at night. Anyone moving was to be regarded at an enemy. 'As soon as it got dark, things, started happening. The Japs came out just as we knew they would. ■ but they didn't think we were up! as clcse to them as we were. It was the last mistake a lot of them ever made.One or our ships in the harbor was shooting flares around us ail, night, making it possible for us 10; see the Japs silhouetted against/ the sky. Those flares saved a Jot; of Marines. ,Firing continued all night, and* in the morning we found more than 20 dead Japs near our foxhole.
