Jwas on 10 )oat tori th her oneturn to Shanghai; tefdw we wore cut off from the outside world. So we c4me to Shanghai oh 4h American wjwfthip. There were about 150 Americans in the party who had gathered at Mokanshhn from many sectionBof China. The consul had gotten an agreement from both sides to stop fighting along the river until we got into ShanghaiThere are now in the refugee camps in Shanghai about 179,000 people. All of these are homeless and penniless. They have nothing to go back to. All the homes have bpen looted by the Japanese and the vast majority have been burned. The battle line has moved miles away from us- now but the Japanese, will not allow us to go back. Mr, Johnson and some of the Methodist folks including Bishop Moore wont through to Soochow three weeks ago. They had Japanese 'military escorts and were not allowed out of their sights. They stopped in Kunslian on their Way up. Our house is still there. There were about 50 Japanese soldiers living in it. It had been looted from kitchen to attic. The only things left were some books, one dresser, three beds and a cook stove. Everything else was gone. We had left two Chinese men there, one who sews for me at times and our boy who looks after our cows. No trace was found of the 'Chinese servants or cattle.“Several times they threatened to send us missionary women and children home, but I thank the Lord it has not been necessary to do so. It would have broken my heait I think. By staying we have been able to help many. This experience the Chinese Christians are going through with, of being scattered abroad the land, continually reminds me of the apostles and Christians at Jeru«**iem being scattered by persecution. My prayer is that it wiu hasten the building of Hiskingdom in the same way.”_ * -nSi-d st: lt;13 ».ss ©•
