New* Service)With American Army in Fiance, March 12.—An American sergeant named Wellman of Cambridge, wa serving as an airplane pilot, shot down |two German machines during the aer-•ial activity Saturday afternoon. Well-man flies a single seated hghting biplane. He volunteered for service with the French aviation corps. Thefeat was accomplished simultaneously with the American artillery preparation and immediately preceding the American raid into the German lines on the Lorraine front Saturday afternoon. Wellman scored his first victim about 4:30 o’clock shooting down a two seated German airplane which was regulating the fire of some Krupp guns. The airplane fell crashing from a height of 12,000 feet. His next vietim got “his” twenty-five minutes later when Wellman dived upon a Gor-%man single sealer which was attempting to attack a French observation machine.
