AcTams, assistant division commander, pin- t ned an Oak Leaf Cluster on Colonel Connors' Silver Star in 3 recognition of his outstanding leadership during the recent lt;“Operation Nomad,” the operation that successfully routed the Chinese from their winter bunker hide-outs.THE CITATION read: ____For gallantry in action during lt;the night of 7-8 November 1951. j “Operation Nomad” had just j been completed, and the 19th ] was in the process of consolidation of their positions when the j Chinese hit the 1st Battalion 1 after dark. Shortly after, two companies became isolated from ] the rest of the units on the 1 line.” ,■Connors advanced to the ajd of : the fighting infantrymen despite lt;a heavy concentration of mor- ‘tar and small arms fire which | was blanketing the entire area, j “Immediately sizing up the situa- lt;tion, he moved from position to position shouting words of en- • couragement and instruction to t the men around him.” Inspired !by the presence of their regimental commander, the soldiers rallied and managed to beat off the attacking Reds with vollies of controlled fire.Connors joined the 19th Infantry Regiment as executive officer in July 1951, and took over the command in the latter part of October. Prior to his service with the Rock of Chickamauga Regiment, Colonel Connors served as a battalion commander with the 187th Airborne Regiment in Korea.
