Mrs. Fiseh said that food and clothing supplied by the Bishops’ Emergency Relief Committee and War relief Services made life in the camps passable.Bishop Walter A. Foery pointed out today in the 10th annual appeal for contributions to the Bishops’ Fund, for the Victims of War that the donations are a life-and-death factor in European DP camps. Quota for the diocese is $50,000, with contributions to be collected at ail massesnext Sunday.“THE POSTWAR period withits -famine, .its destitution, its displaced people, continues to be. a problem for the Holy Father/ said the bishop. “They are human needs which he seeks to relieve. The church cannot stand by helplessly. She must take part in this gigantic problem that she may stand before the world as the universal mother of humanity.”' , '. The Fiseh family supported Bishop Foery's statement of theimportance of aid supplied by the American bishops’ relief agencies.Mrs. Fiseh told how they had received clothing from the Catholic agencies while in a DP campat.Rechenfeld, Germany, located irt the British zone. It was impossible to buy clothing, she said, as staggering sums of German marks were required and displaced persons were not allowed to hold outside jobs.FOOD GIVEN to them was. especially appreciated, according to Mrs.-Fiseh, who described the DP’s weekly ration as being equal to one day’s food in the United States.Mr. and Mrs. Fiseh’s four children, now attending Sacred Heart School, are Dominick, 16: Monica, 13; Longina, 10, and Eugene, T. The family lived atPinsk, a Polish community near the Russian border, until captured by the Germans in 1944.They were encouraged to come to the United States by relatives in Syracuse, Mrs. Anna Srogi of 340 Apple st, and Mr. and Mrs. Michael Szeliga of 338 Apple st.4IN HIS message asking for contributions to the war relief agencies, Bishop Foery said, “During the last 9 years American Catholics have been increasingly generous in their contributions to this fund. Millions of dollars have come from our clergy and our ‘people have found their way into every area whereit was possible for the churchto enter.“It is true that our contribution measured in terms of aet-ual4 need will be small, but it will represent the desire of the whole church to assist our suffering brothers in Christ.“IT IS needless to tell youthat if the church fails to express practically her love of the poor and the distressed in these limes she will suffer a tremendous loss. This is .the great motive which compels the Holy j Father to invite us to hold up his hands in the spiritual and corporal works of mercy which he through our alms wishes to perform.”* The Rev. Joseph B. Toomey, head of the Syracuse Catholic Charities organization, is diocesan director of the drive, with Bishop Foery serving as honorary chairman. Area directors the Rev. Dennis M.
