.WATERLOO DAILY COURIER, WATERLOO, IOWA59 Survivors of Torpedoed tShip Feared Storm VictimsNew York—(UP)—Filty-nine persons who got away in three lifeboats after the 5,152-ton Brazilian steamer Cayru was torpedoed off the New Jersey coast Sunda/ were missing Wednesday and it was feared they had perished in gales, sleetand rain.The sinking was revealed Tuesday night by four passengers and 22 members of the cvew landed here. They were rescued after spending 16 hours in a tossing lifeboat, constantly in peril of being swamped.Three additional new sinkings by submarines were reported Tuesday. Fifteen members of the crew brought to New York by rescue vessels said two lifeboats had capsized and they believed 18 of their shipmates had been lost in them.Survivors of the 7,932-ton. Panamanian tanker Hanseat and the 5,-104-ton merchantman Cardonia, owned by the Liykes-Bros, steamship company of New Orleans, were landed at West Indies ports. Both vessels had been torpedoed and shelled.All aboard the Hanseat were saved; 22 survivors of the Cardonia said 16 of their shipmates were missing.The Havana newspaper FI Crisol reported that two American warships had arrived at the Quantaramo bay base towing an unidentified tanker, which had been shelled by an enemy submarine and set on fire. Fiane3 sank the submarine, the newspaper said. Three men aboard the tanker were killed.The Cayru survivors said that the captain of the submarine which torpedoed their ship — obviously German — injured, after firing one torpedo, whether all were in lifeboats before he fired a second , torpedo which blew the ship apart.The surviving passengers are Alberto Jaegers, a former American citizen and world war veteran who now is a Brazilian citizen; his wife; Mrs. Willie de Souza, formerly Miss Willie Saunders og Bedford, Va., and her daughter, June. 15.(Continued)many years mail.a city eouncil-For eouncilmen; First Ward—-Leo C.
