But It Faces New UW Test Today• ''.i VRuling HonoredThe University of Wisconsinr *Student Court's unprecedented decision to reinstate Students for a Democratic Society lt;SDS)mas a student organization s u r-vivcd its first test Wednesday but faces another today.Wednesday, University and‘ w *Memorial Union officials quickly and quietly granted an SDS request for a meeting room, thereby honoring the court's Tuesday restraining order which overthrew an earlier Student Senate resolution banning SDS from the campus until September.Senate canceled the SDS status as a student organizationMar. 2 for interfering with University operations during an anti-war sit-in Feb. 22.The decision, which could broaden widely student power in disciplinary cases, must also sur\ive a special meeting of theStudent Life and Interest Committee (SLICl called for 3: JOp.m. today fo discuss the matter.SLIC, which consists of ninefaculty and six student mem-*bers. was thought to he the logical route for SDS to take anv«•appeal from the Senate's action to ban them. In a surprise move Monday, SDS decided to take their appeal to the StudentCourt.The court, which usuallyv ydeals with traffic cases, has nine justices, with three sittingon each case. All the justicesare students.Gary Zweifel, president of the Wisconsin Student Assn iWSAi. said Wednesday that he would also comply with the restraining order issued by the court.The order reinstated SDS untilthe court hears the appeal Mar. 18.SLIC may attempt to overthrow the court order at the meeting today and claim it (SLIC) has jurisdiction in theappeal.William Campbell, Colgate, student attorney for SDS, said Wednesday that if SLIC attempts to lake jurisdiction, he would argue that it is not the proper body to hear an appeal from Student Court.The court's constitution p r o*vides for a student-faculty com-*mittee to hear appeals from its decisions. The whole question of the court’s power to issue a restraining order and its right toact in the case is still unclear.
