Times News ServiceNEW YORK — AMF Inc. says that it has signed a letter of intent to sell its subsidiary, the Harley-Davidson Motor Co., the only United States concern that still makes motorcycles.The company said that the buyers were a group of the current Harley-Davidson management team, headed by AMF’s vice president, Vaughn L. Beals Jr., who has overseen the division since 1976.The amount of the transaction was not disclosed.Harley-Davidson, with headquarters in Milwaukee, has been able to maintain a slim lead over its Japanese competitors in the market for large, heavy motorcycles, which totaled about 130,000 units last year. The subsidiary took about 30 percent of the sales, compared with 26 percent for Honda, the closest competitor.
