Friday. 13th inst. ’On Fndav morning an insurrection of thenegroes took places on the plantation ol Messrs. Hewitt, Heran Co.. about ten miles belowthe city, on the line of toe Mexican Gulf rail-way. As for as we can gather from the vanousstatements afloat, we believe'the- following particolars are as correct as '-an be obtained at pres-ant A negro man belonging to Mr Hewitthacf 6o*»n refractory tor sometime past, for which he was threatened'with punishment. Un f riday last, about noon, he committed another fault and became abusive. The overseer ordered* ‘ \ i *him to be whipped and called the driver to layhint down by force for that purpose. The negro replied to this that no white man should ever whip him and live. This appeared to bethe signal for an outbreak, for the driver thenrefused to perforin his duty. The overseer find-ing himself povirerless and in danger, went forassistance to the adjoining plantation of Mr. Svdney Story, returned with Mr. Batts, his overseer, each being armed. On entering the plantation they found the negroes, about 70 in nujnber, had quit their work, and many of the men were grouped together, as if in. consultation. The two overseers approached, and demanded of them to return to their work forthwith, or all should be punished. Just at this moment Mr. S ory entered, having a sword cane in his hand.
