AMERICANS CAPTURE HUNDREDS OF PRISONERS UPON ENTERING CITY.Trier, March 2.—(A?)—Trier, Germany’s oldest community, was a dead city, abandoned by most of its 88,000 peacetime inhabitants, when it fell to the U. S. Third army today.Trier is badly scarred from aerial bombardment, but the famous Porta Nigra structure, built by the Romans in the third century, hardly was touched, and the cathedral, dating back to the fourth century, was damaged only to a. repairable extent at one end.American troops entered the narrow, crooked streets in the ancient quarter of the city earlier today.The first were members of a task | force led by Lieutenant Colonel ■ Jack Richardson of Athens, Tex., j and they seized intact the south j bridge over the Moselle. This enabled tanks to roll across and establish a bridgehead on the western bank.Blow Up Bridge Span.As the first tank reached the western end a German who apparently was assigned to set off the charge sprinted away.
