Sid Salins writes in The Howler newsletter issued from 2511 Van Buren St., West Hyattsville, Md. 20782 as follows:SPEAKING OF RECOGNITION FOR THE 99TI1. . .we hope all of you were able tocatchABC's'Brave Rifles'last month, whichwas perhaps the best of the post-war specials on the 'Bulge'. For those who did not see it. . . our outfit was mentioned conspicuously, and the battle for Elsenborn ridge was referred to as the most ciritcal of the entire campaign! The network promises to loan us the use of the iilm for some future convention. Company K Silvio D'Alisera, 2 2 5 8 Ellis Avenue, Bronx, N. Y. ; Wilson G. Billet of York, Pa. ; and Lawrence R. McQuaide have returned dues for 19G7. Silvio writes as follows:As to a documentary film on the 99th Division--First I would like to say, I will always be ready to serve in any way I can.If such a plan is ever to become a reality we must get our members together because it will take a lot of work and I'm afraid, money. 1 doubt that at this time we could get the Government to bear the cost of such a project. We can, through requests from the Association to the Army, have all available film loaned to us but the cost of duplicating this film will have to be borne by us and the original film returned to the Army. I can get the particulars on thisprocedure.1 have visited the Signal Corps Photo Center in Astoria, New York and scannedthe library index cards but have not viewed the actual film, it is all 25MM, Positive, Silent film. Listed as 99 Division or underthe 9 separate Regiments this is what theyhave:993 at Aue, Germany April 9, 191.K -391 at Fretter, Germany April 11 19 1399 Signal Co. at Sourbrodt, Belgium-lay ing wire in snow393 taking Altorhundem, Germany April 10, 19d 3i Co. -393 taking a hill--Werdohl, Germany April 11, 1913German tank battalion surrendering at Sutulwig and Iserielm, Germany on April 1(), 19137th Armored Division 99th Division take* Odingen, Germany April 10, 1913(Didn't get the town on this--ApriI 13 ,19*13--ike visits Generals Bradley, Courtney 1 lodges, Van Fleet and Walter 1C HauerFlsenborn-~December 33, 19 11 —in foxhole's watching bomber vapor trails and flakKrinkelt retaken by 2nd Div. .January 31, 1913--Not us V ? VVerviers, Belgium--November 23, 191-1 31 1 Ordinance Heavy Maintainance--Thanks -giving Dinner--were they attached to 99?Now, that is what is known as 99th Div. tilm available. Keep in mind the millions of feet of film shot during the war. It wasn't always marked on tin* cameraman's reports as to what outfit he was shooting---or dates only were used--or towns only and then probably invariably mispelled. Now by cross checking an awful long row of file cards we can probably find more by looking under town names. Or a thing like Ucmagen Bridge must have been covered from hereto Sunday and back. Maybe under Congressional Medal of Honor we may find something on L Co's Sgt. McGarity. The monument Memorial at Bastogne has the name and insignia of all Divisions in the Bulge. I’m sure there must be* good coverage on thatMonument.The News Dept, of NBC did an hour on the Bulge in December of cither !9(M or 19G3. In that show they brought our own .Jim Rcvell --H Co. 393--back to Flscnborn.I'm sure I could get NBC to let me duplicate from the show1 and the unused footage.Then there is our own men--through their stories for a narration. Through anystii 1 photographs they have, negalive or print--! could reproduce on motion picture lilm. Maybe they could recall a place or date when they saw a cameraman taking movies.
