It stands there, and the mustached figure of a soldier in the capped uniform of the 1860’s looks intently down toward Lincoln street, toward the Pepperell mill, almost as if he expected to see his relief marching toward him.Though few could repeat what is inscribed on any one side of the monument—say nothing of all four—thousands would miss and mourn the old landmark if it were suddenly gone.To most men now alive, “it has always been there” and in that thought its continuation there is justified and its being sufficiently explained.But there must have been a day in Biddeford when the monument was a most important center of attention, when all knew what it was to the-Smallest detail, when all knew just what it was meant to say to folk .who would live in later years—who would,live today, for instance.Actually today, like the tack in the wall to which the supporting string of the Christmas tree is annually attached at home, the monument is the peg on which patriotic observances are set.
