Since the lays when we followed our first circus parade, to the pulse-stirring strains of the uniformed band sitting aloft In their gilded, palatial wagon drawn by prancing horses, we have never quite lost the magic thrill which always returns when we hear rousing strains i -f a good band. Yet even In the band has the idea of unusualness been carried out. for it is a singing band that will be featured this year. The While Hussars will appear on the porgram on the closing day. Their combination of stirring band music with vocal work has made them one of the most pleas-i'tg successes of recent years.At the present time with the subject of national defense receiving attention. it is interesting to know that I'rofessor Wood Is the inventor of tin' hearing torpedo. about which so much lias appeared in magazines and newspapers. This submarine instrument is noted for Its humane possibilities and its almost human Intelligence.At one point in his iccture-tlemon-stmtinn. I'rofessor Wood allows members of the audience to come to the platform and wrestle with a 28-pound •yroscope running at a speed of nearly ::.000 revolutions a minute. Later lie demonstrates the application of the gyroscope to the aeroplane and monorail car by actually sending small models of these twentieth century carriers out in midair on a slender wire stretched above one of the aisles of the auditorium. Sometimes when he is introduced, he will rise from the audience, dressed in evening attire, walk upon the stage, i-nd with one wave fo Ills handkerchief produce from apparently nowhere a bowl running over with water and with Jive gold fish swimming about.lie burns a piece of common paper, and •* dove rises phoenix-like from the ashes. He apparently tears the dove in tv.'o. only to find that lie has two doves in his hands.
