Local SoldiersWith Unit Cited For ServiceHEADQUARTERS, 609th ORD- \ NANCE BASE ARMAMENTMAINTENANCE BATTALION—ENGLAND—The Meritorious Service Unit Plaque was recently awarded to this battalion for superior performance of duty during the preparatory phase of the invasion of Western Europe and the build-up following D-Day.Working around the clock, seven dav a week schedule, the battalion personnel operating one of the largest maintenance and supply depots in the United Kingdom met every deadline required of them during tjae invasion weeks.Two Blue Islanders, Cpl, Charles H. Racine, 41, 2430 Walnut st„and Cpl John M. Grabowski, 24, 1833 High st., were among themen in the unit to be awarded. Cpl. Racine, with the Headquarters and Service Company attached to the battalion, was employed by the International Harvester before entering the army. Cpl. Gra-bowski, an artillery mechanic with an artillery and fire control maintenance company assigned to the battalipn, and son of Mr. and Mrs. John Gross, was employed at the West Pullman Works of the International Harvester Company before entering the service. Both men have been in the armed forces for 32 months.Credit for the award goes to every man in the outfit,’' explain-Lt. Col. Gilbert D.
