I i i/fUUUM * » « * ft n .The Bataan Death March was the forcedmarch of 70,000 Americanand Filipino prisoners of war captured by the Japanese in the PhippiMra in thlt;* early stages ofWorld War II,Starting out fromMariveles, on thlt;* southern end of the Bataan Peninsula, on April 9, 1942, theywere force-marched 55 miles to San Fernando, then taken by rail to Capas, from there they walked the final eight rniles to Camp O’Donnell.Starved and mistreated,only 54.000 reached the camp, 7,000*10,000 dii*d onthe way and the rest esc aped to the jungle.The Bataan Veterans Organization has come into being because of the close fraternity that formed among prisoners of war as a result of their shared gruesome and horrible experience.Himself a survivor of the march, Yates preferred not to recount his experience there.“We don't like to talk about that too much; we dont like to think about what happened back then/* he said.The American Exprisoners of War was formed in the 60 s, but the Bataan Veterans Organization was k#*pt maintained here because of the large number of Bataan veterans in this area, Yates said.A speech was given byLeo Padilla, B.V.O. member from Albuquer-tju#*, on legislation recently introduced in Congress by Congressman Manuel Lujan, Jr., First District, NewCO.House Resolution 3188would grant survivors ofthe Bataan Death March and Corregidor the right to have their claim for reparations heard in the l\S. Claims Court in early June.The court will decide if an apology should be made or if reparations should beawarded.Major GeneralChildress, from the Roswell Military Institute, spoke on the construction of a new military museum that will be built there in the fall of this year.According to Gen. Childress, th** museum will be the only one in the world to represent all four warsat one location.
