Silver Star Of U• S. Given John E. Hardy For Bravery In ActionThe Silver Star medal has beenawarded posthumously to JohnEllis Hardy, 11, pharmacist'smate third class, t'SNR, of Roqte 5. Box 505, Tucsou, the Eleventh Naval District announced today. The bluejacket was killed during the assault on Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, Nov. fft, IMS. He was the son of Warren E. Hardy of Tucson.According to the citation, which was signed by the late Frank Knox, secretary of the navy. Bluejacket Hardy displayed conspicuous gallantry while attached to the second marine division during the landing on Tarawa.. Although injured severely in the right arm while disembarking from an amphibian tractor,** the citation read, Hardy skillfully administered to the wounded on the beach and rescued four others from the water, j While subjected ts Intense enemy fire, he continued to care for his comrades, carrying on valiantly for more than five hours despite hi« own wounds until he was killed by a Japanese hand grenade. He gallantly gave his life for his country.**Hardy enlisted In the Navy at Phoenix in Nov. 1942. He was born at Tucson, Sept. 8, 1922.
