Air Battles and bombing raids were reported by bcth sides. Forces of Egypt, Jordan and Syria were involved on the Arab side.I The fighting came about after ja series of minor clashes over the last few months across the Syrian-Israeli border, followed by Egypt’s command May 17 for the United Nations to withdraw the U.N. Emergency Force that had separated Israel and Egypt on the Sinai frontier and at the Gaza Strip.The U.N. Security Council, which h a d met fruitlessly fortwo weeks in an effort to preserve the peace, was called into emergency session in New York.Britain expressed grave concern and launched new discussions among the Big Four powers.The fighting first erupted on the Sinai Desert front between Egyptian and Israeli troops and tanks, then spread to the Syrianand Jordanian fronts. Both sides accused the other of slarting the war after weeks of crisis.The hardest ground fighting appeared to be centered in the Sinai Desert front involving Egyptian and Israeli troops.An israeli dispatsh claimed the army there had made gains but this was denied in Cairo. Fighting also broke out along the Egyptian-administered GazaStrip farther north.Jordanian and Israeli artillery dueled along the border of divided Jerusalem. Damascus said the Syrian army had gone . into action on its front yith Is-. rael.j Both sides claimed sweeping | victories in the air battles, the j biggest of which broke cut over [the Sinai Desert.Cairo radio claimed 70 Israeliplanes had been shot down.An Israeli Arsb-language broadcast claimed Israel had destroyed 150 Egyptian planes.Damascus radio was even more sweeping claiming all Israeli planes “vanished from the skies of the battle.” The broadcast said three Israeli planes attempting to raid Syria were shot down.
