Purple Heart AwardGoes To Sabin ManWounded In Hawaii\Marine Corps air depot, Miramar, Calif.—For shrapnel wounds j c sustained in the south Pacific, j Marine Staff Sergeant Russell s Kuehl, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. | c H. Kuehl, Sabin,- was awarded the purple heart medal here.He received the award during presentation ceremonies conducted by Lieutenant Colonel Francis E. j I Pierce.. Sergeant Kuehl’s wife, the former Lucille Griffin, lives at 818 Tenth street south, Moorhead. They were married when he was home on furlough recently.Recently returned to the United States after 34 months of overseas service, Staff Sergeant Kuehl suffered severe leg injuries when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He was manning a broadside gun on an American battleship when he was hit by shrapnel from a bursting bomb.Upon recovery, he was transferred into an aviation squadron asa non-commissioned officer in a transportation echelon stationed at Ewa field, Hawaii.Now awaiting specialized training at a marine aviation school, the former Moorhead high school student is attached to an aviation training squadron here. He enlisted in the marines in February 1941, and took his recruit training at San Diego, Calif., before going overseas.
