Six Months at War—How Are We Doing?• a news commentator broadcast-lug on Memorial Day noted that there was little enthusiasm or cheering from the people on the street as a great military parade passed by. He made excuse for. the lack of demonstration by commenting, “You can't cheer tanks, but the people were -visibly impressed.v You can't cheer tacks, but you most certainly should cheer the .soldiers manning .them—these, men who have the duty of defending our eher-jished freedom. War is a grim business and Memorial Day is not a day for demonstration, but for remembrance of the : sacrifices made for the preservation of our country, and! for dedication of those living to the [grave taste ahead.All that we have fought for in past wars is again at stake, and in greater peril than, ever before. The . Axis powers would enslave and domi- . nate the whole world, even as they i have stripped all liberties from occupied Europe and China, and im- , prisoned and murdered thousands of j citizens of those lands. ^ .We -have been at. war for . six ; months, and although we have reason to be proud of the eourage and skill of the men in our armed forces how in the battle zones, we have had no major victories. 65,000 of our cifci-; zens were taken prisoner at- Correg-* idor and Bataan, including 35,000 soldiers, sailors and marines, the remainder civilians on the island.At least one of these men is from our own county. Corporal Glenn Beyer is officially listed as^ “missing”— probably a prisoner of the Japs. Glenn is the son of Mr. and Mrs.Gerrit Beyer, residing just a mile west of Alton. No list of prisoners has yet been submitted to our government by the Japanese.K the people of the United States had been sufficiently awake to the “yellow peril the Philippines could have been adequately protected, Admiral Yarned, distinguished retired commander of our peacetime fleet in the Pacific, has said in his memoirs. We were not awake, and have only ourselves to blame for the loss of our island possessions and above all, our gallant young men. Our Iowa senators and congressmen, -along with the rest of the “isolationist bloc voted against all appropriations for defense purposes.The only way we can redeem our mistakes is to throw all our energiesand every resource into the present effort to build up our war production. Buy more War Bonds and Savings Stamps, give liberally to USO, Red Cross, Army and Navy Relief! This is the very least we can do.
