Getting up before daybreak, under the direction of a friend, I managed to obtain a position near the reviewingstand. Even then the streets were denselypacked by anxiously expectant crowds. Favorable positions brought a high price. A hundred dollars was asked for the rental of asingle window commanding a good view ofthe stand. At nine o'clock A. M., the signalgun was fired. Immediately after, PresidentJohnson, Secretary Stanton, Generals Grant,Meade and other prominent men, mountedthe stand prepared for them, and were greeted by loud cheers, which had hardiv subsidedwhen Gen. Sherman made his appearance atthe head of his army. lie was mounted upon a splendid horse . covered with wreaths offlowers, placed there by his admirers. Cheersgreeted him upon every side. Passing thereviewing stand a short distance, he dismounted and took a position near Gen. Grant.Next came Gen. Logan, commanding theArmv of the Tennessee, literally loaded downwith floral tributes from his friends. Againthe cheers ascended on all sides. Then camethe 15th Corps. It would be impossible forme to describe the magnificent appearancethey presented as they marched up and by incolumn, by companies, twenty abreast, theirguns glittering like silver—their regulartramp, tramp—their bronzed faces and stalwart and soldierly appearance. 1 could nothelp beiog impressed by the remarks whichwere constantly being made around meOit — • - - 'They make a finer appearance than theArmy of the Potomac “ they see n to bebetter drilled and disciplined “ what magnificent looking soldiers:'’ “just look at thatregiment * (pointing to the ISth Wisconsin,)what a splendid looking body of men I” The15th Corps passed, and was followed bv the17th Corps, headed by Gen. Frank P. Blair,who seemed, by the warm reception and floral tributes given, him,to be a great favorite.The 17th corps was headed by the :d division, the 17th Wisconsin leading the divis-Dion. The regiment appeared splendidly—itsworn banner, and the soldierly bearing of themen being applauded at every step. Its gallant Colonel Malloy has since been brevetteda Brigadier General. Next came the 16thWisconsin, under the leadership of its com-anding officer, Brevet Brigadier GeneralFairchild. The 16th has the reputation ofbeing the best drilled and most efficient regiment in the 17th corps, and Fairchild, itscommanding officer, was promoted at the request of General Sherman himself. The 16thwas followed by the 12lb, Colonel Proudfit,since brevetted Brigadier General. The I2tb,with its well filled ranks, passed, amidst thewarmest applause of the spectators.Then came the 1st division, containing the25th and 32d Wisconsin regiments, who, likethe others, made a gallant soldierly appearance. The Colonels of the 25th and 32dhave since been brevetted Brigadier Generals. The passage of the 17th corps concluded the passage of the Army of the Tennessee, which was followed by the 14 th and 20thcorps, Army of Georgia. They did not loseby comparison with the troops preceding them.The 1st, 3d and 22d Wisconsin regimentsare in the 20th corps, and their appearancedid credit to Iheir State. Their Colonelshave since been brevetted Brigadier Generals. General Sherman’s armv was about sixhours in passing, and although the spectatorswere twelve hours on the ground, yet no oneseemed fatigued while witnessing the splendid pageant. The superiority of the Western Army was generally conceded. Eventhe officers of the Potomac Army admittedthat they could not be surpassed for all thatconstitutes true soldiership. I could nothelp feeling proud of our Wisconsin regi-ents. Their appearance and reputationare highly creditable to themselves and state.J. R. M.
