Abel ends careerI.W. Abel, a native of Minerva in Stark County, steps down this month as president of the 1.4 million-member United Steelworkers of America. *His retirement means the end of an era in union leadership since presidents of the longshoremen, auto workers and the AFL-CIO itself have retired or are expected to retire this year.Abe! went to work in 1925 for the old American Sheet and Tin Mill Works in Canton, earning $12 to $14 a day. The Depression put him out of work and later into a brickyard job that he says taught him that a strong labor movement is essential in order for a worker to gain a “better tomorrow.”Abel became a paid union organizer in 1937, the same yearof the infamous “Little Steel Strike” in Massillon. He rose to head of the USW District 27 in Canton and then to interna-sidency in 1965. In the recent election he campaigned vigorously for Lloyd McBride, who defeated insurgent Ed Sadiowski for the Pittsburgh based USW helm.
