The Last Full Measure of DevotionRalph Klump Had Rare Privilege of Cutting Marker For Grave of Son, First Area Vietnam CasualtyThose who wandered in Crown Hill Cemetery Tuesday — or during the days prior to the holiday while placing memorial tokens on the graves of loved ones — may have observed the gray Barre granite stone recently erected in the most northeasterly plot in the old cemetery for the Ralph Klump family of Marshallville RD I.It has a two-fold distinction for on the east side lies the body of Marine PFC John T. Klump. this community's first and only casualty of the Vietnam War to “date. Its other distinction is that it was cut by the skilled hands of his father at the Zieber Monument Works. 877 Cleveland Ave;Mr. Klump worked seven years ago for Mr. Zieber and so learned the art of masking granite with rubber so that it can be carved by saridblastlng. although the shop at that time was not equiped with an automatic sandblasting machine invented by Mr Zieber and manufactured by the Will Burt Company under license.After masking a beautiful design for the lovely stone, however. Mr. Klump quickly mastered the sandblast device, cutting the design, the family name and. on the reverse side, this inscription:In memory of our son. PFC John T. Klump. USMC. Born in Hocking Co.. Ohio, on September 22. 1946. and gave bis life for his country on September 24, 1966. whije on Operation Prairie at the Rock Pile near the GJuang Tri Province. Republic of Vietnam.This stone, then. Is the work of love from a father to his //'son. who died In the defense of freedom for a people whom he did not know in a far distant land at the age of 20 years andtwo days.As we write this, tears flow from an Old Man’s eyes. too.Ralph and his wife. Dorothy, live on Route 94 North. John and his wife. Sheryl, lived on North Crown Hill Road before he entered the service.
