Harrisonburg To Have Soviet 'Sister City'News-Record StaffWhat do the city of Peterhoff in the Soviet Union and Harrisonburg and Rockingham County have in common?Probably not much yet, but if all goes as planned they will become “sister cities” in the next couple of months.Mary Bradshaw, of the Local-International Network Committee of Harrisonburg and Rockingham Coun{y, told the county supervisors Wednesday night that the Soviet city of about 50,000 people had been chosen as a sister community for this area.Peterhoff is in the northwest part of the Soviet Union about 50 miles from Leningrad. That puts it directly north of Moscow and just south of Finland.Ms. Bradshaw said Peterhoff is so named because it was the location ofczar Peter the Great's summer palace.The only cost of the program to the county and city will be some stationery, she said.Supervisors Chairman Charles Ahrend agreed to write a letter to Peterhoff s mayor asking his city to participate in the sister city program. Ms. Bradshaw asked Ahrend to dress up the letter a little bit.“The Russians are very formal people, and are very impressed with pomp and circumstance and official letters and so forth,” she said. “The more seals you can put on it, the better. They really like it to look fancy.”Along those lines, Supervisor William B. Kyger Jr. made a suggestion that would give Peterhof-fians the first idea of the backbone of Rockingham County culture.“We'll even write the letter with a turkey feather pen,” Kyger said.
