Live a Lot and Like It!llfsVfniaaarosVast.de*11You can take it from 16-year-old John Giordane, ex-sergeant of the marines, there is nothing that looks quite so good when you are on an isolated patrol in a Pacific jungle as a small white parachute floating to earth with a cargo of canned rations. That's why today Johnny is manning a machine in the slitter department of the American Can company's Maywood Sanitary plant, 13th avenue and St. Charles street.“You’re out in the midst of a jungle and you’ve eaten your last can of rations the day before and 11 you’re so hungry you see stars in front of your eyes. Then, you see a little white sail in the sky and it turns out to be a parachute with a bunch of canned rations n | tied on—well, you’ve gotta be there to know how it feels,” saysJohnny.Explaining why he isn’t currently with the marines, JohnnyII goes on, “They wouldn’t let me fight any more—said I was too young after I’d been in four engagements in the Pacific. So they put me out of the marines 'till I was older—after they'd made me a sergeant, too.” One gathered Johnny doesn’t think too much of the judgment of certain higher-ups.“Well, I said to myself, if they won’t let me fight for awhile then I'll do the next best thing—-I'll L“ I find a job where I can help turn “s I out some of the things that meant so much to me. Robert Magnesen, 25, who. died June 25 of wounds incurred at Saipan,will be held at St. John’s Lutheran church, 1200 South 5th avenue, Maywood.In the infantry, Pfc. Magnesen had been through several Pacific campaigns during his thirty-three months of service, including the battle for Makin. Prior to his induction he was employed by the Campbell Soup company.In addition to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Berger Magnesen, he is survived by a sister, Ruth, and a brother, George.Pfc. Magnesen was graduated from Proviso high school in the class of 1937. He was confirmed in St. John’s Lutheran church in 1933. The memorial service will be held immediately following the regular Sunday morning service at St. John’s church.Public Welfare OrganizationThe infant clinic of the Maywood Public Welfare organization will be conducted from 1 to 3 o'clock Friday afternoon, July 28, in the recreation room of the Maywood village halLWater SituationAt the regular meeting of the President and Board of Trustees Monday evening, July 24, the village of Melrose Park adopted a contract covering the use of the Melrose Park water supply line as a conveyance of Chicago water to Maywood,This contract is the result of several meetings held between the presidents and attorneys of the respective villages, whereby Maywood will obtain Chicago water at the convenient point of the Melrose Park water line at Iowa street and Ninth avenue. Dittus of 1013 South 9th avenue, Maywood, was home this week on furlough from his duties at Upper Darby, Pa. Although he leaves today for the same post, he will enter officer candidate school at Fort Monmouth, N. J., next Sunday.While here, Cpl. Dittus was soloist at the First Presbyterian church in Maywood.
