VOL LX, No. 30Bill ParichyMissing in ISea Explosion“The Navy Department deeply regrets to inform you that your son Emery William Parichy, Quartermaster second class, USNR, is reported missing in action in the performance of his duty and in the service of his country.” So ran the war department telegram which Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Parichy of 1113 Harlem avenue, Forest Park, received on July 19.Last Saturday, “Bill's” captain, Charles Swim, informed the family that there was little hope of recovering the 20-year-old sailor's body, since he was dining below in the mess hall, at the time the explosion occured off the coast of France. Only six of the 125 men aboard the minsweeper were listed as missing in the blast, which occurred on June 5.“Bill” was a graduate of Proviso high school where he was active as a life guard, and was a member of the football team. On January 20, 1943, he was inducted into the Navy, and shortly after his boot training, was assigned-to to the mine sweeper.Mr. Parichy, “Bill's” father, was in the Radio division of the Navy in World War I. A sister, Maryann, who received her Bachelor of Science degree recently at St. Andrews, is currently doing graduate nurses work at Mercy hospital. Another sister, Donna Grace, is a sophomore at Proviso.
