28SETS EXAMPLE OF BROTHERLINESS.New York.—A shining example of tolerance and true human brotherhood was set by Rabbi Lee J. Levinger, the popular executive director of the New York Y. M. H. A., when he recently officiated at the funeral of a Gentile war hero after a Christian minister had declined to do so unless assured of his pay.Some time ago the body of Private Henry Pilger, of the 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division, A. E. F., who fell at the last battle of the Marne, wras brought back from France and turned over to his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Henry Pilger, of 156 East Eighty-sixth street, New York. The Ammon-Pilger Post (partly named after the fallen hero) of the Veterans of Foreign Wars undertook to give their former comrade a fitting funeral. And as he was a Christian and the son of Christian parents, a minister of that faith was summoned to perform the obsequies.The summoned minister appeared. To the amazement of the assembledTHE SENT INIveterans, themselves Christians, the first thing he said was: “And who will pay me for my services?” The menacing looks of the outraged veterans caused the parson to beat a hasty retreat.For a moment the comrades of the dead hero were nonpulsed. Then someone thought of the popular Jewish chaplain of the 27th Division, Rabbi Lee J. Levinger, and suggested that he be sent for. The rest concurring, he went to summon Rabbi Levinger.
