AppealIN mr.VLF OF THU T5ICOLOGICAL SEMI XA.UY COl-LUGF OF GCTTYSJ3U11G.The undersigned, representatives of th Theological and (Jolloguto Institutions o Gettysburg, iecl alike called oo and author teed by the present emeigeocy, to uddrcs the Christuui Public. Iu the Providenc Of Gud /irtt-uuiec and ordei !y town, hereto fore known only for its umseries of htcra ture, science and ielision, has been selectee us the theatre foroue of the fiercest, mos j extensive and eventful conflicts of the age In com Lion with all our loyal citizens, wlt; rejoice that a gracious God has, notwithstanding our national and individual sais. granted us a glorious victory. With hum ble gratitude we rejoioe m the hope, thal this result will iuohue the enemies of our country to lay down the arms of their rebellion, and will tend to restore the unify, peace aud prosperity of our government For this victory', whilst we concede nil due credit to the military genius of our officers, aud the unsurpassed bravery of our soldiei* wc desire to aseube the chief glory to luui, who lilies among tho armies of heaven aud ; inhabitants of earth, aud without whose (support and aid, all human efforts are Yam. I Id the mean time our Theological and ! Collegiate Institutions, together with the 1 Professors' houses, have fieeu made a sad * scene of devastation and ruin. The vidgo I ou which the greater paitox these buildings ! are located, was successively occupied by j the several anuses. Their batteries weie planted ju the vicinity of these edifices,| ■which wore oooupied by tho enemy dunug | tfie several days of conflict, and cuntautly exposed to the (iro, as the place was scveial tunes taken and retaken by both armies. The Theological Seminary was struck by a number of shells aud balls, and several serious fuctuies caused, which will probably require part of one gable ond to be takeu down. The hoube occupied by J)r. Sohmucker, was pcrfuinted by thirteen shells and cannon ba!L, several Inrge figures wcic uiado iu the walls, window frames were shattCied. and nearly all the glass de-'troyod. Tho houses of the othci Piolcs^orb in rbo vicinity, were also alfuioie or IcoS injured, aud the fences aud some uut-houseb on 20 acres of Seminal v land, aliuoat wholly destroyed- The Seminary aud College are, and for a month to come, probably will, be occupied as hospitals for the sick and wounded of both armies, »ud will require not only many lcpiut*, but also much puubcution and paintnj, before they can again be occupied lor then appropriate purposes. With this brief and unvnrnishcj statement of facts, vre address our appeal fii^t ra the Lutheran Church, for whose instruction and elevation especially, these Institutions have for thirty years been laboring. We request our ministers to take up a collection for tills purpose, and where this Luot done, wc a^k active laymen to collect Irotn friends of the cause. But it is not only to these that our appeal is directed. Our Institutions have from th* beginning been op*u to all denominations, and multitudes . of all creeds have been educated in them : The College, moreover, whilst it is decidedly Christian aud Protestant, is as entirely unsectarian as that of Princeton or Yale, j To the patriot, therefore, whoso heart over- « flows with gratitude to God for the recent | victory, in the achievement of which our j iDjutiob were caused, we respectfully up-; peal for some comnbulion as a grateful of- ! fering lu God, who ga\e us the success — ; Should the aggregate of contributions ex- ' cecd vhatte necessary to repair the inju-lies suffered, the surplus shall be equally dmJu'd between both Institutions. And will it not ever be a pleasing reflection to each donor, that he has contributed to the , ppvspenty of institutions of Hteuiluro aud . religion, located in tho place, hereafter i ever memorable in our national history, u« the seat of one of the greatest battles and most glorious victories of the federal unn*? that he has contributed to th osc institutions, whose student-*, in response to the call of the Governor for 5U.0UU men, to expel tiie rebel army from our soil, formed the firat Volunteer Company, that reached tho place of rendezvous at Harrisburg?—• Will it, finally, not De a pleasing reflection to them aud to all future visitors of this memorable battle field, tint the institutions, whose soil was plowed up by the cannon ball*, whose halls were stained with blood in defense of the Union, and around which arc buried some of the martyrs who died in our holy came, were not pernianctly injured; but that by the liberality of chris-
