Davies’ best seller. The film.titled after the book, begins at theRialto theater today.The picture has a very large cast with Walter Huston and Ann Harding in the starring roles of Ambassador and Mrs, Davies. Their daughter, Emlen. whose romantic meeting in Moscow withRobert Grosjean, who is now her husband and part of the story, is portrayed by lovely young Eleanor Parker with Richard Travis playing Robert Grosjean.The story opens with the famed session of the Assembly of the League of Nations at Geneva in June, 1936, centering on Haile Selassie's eloquent plea. In rapid montage the amazing pace of axisaggression is shown -incidents inthe Spanish Civil war: the Japanese invasion of China: delivery of axis equipment to Franco; bombing of China and the withdrawal of Chiang Kai-shek.In America. Mr. Davies is hurriedly called to the White House and entrusted on an important mission to the Soviet capital. As ambassador to Russia. Roosevelt asks Mr, Davies to go to Russia and get the true facts about that country.In Moscow, Davies calls at theKremlin to present his credentials to President Kalinin and the latter expresses Russia's earnest desire for peace, but flatly declares that, if war comes Russia is prepared.
