keep snooting ana coming.Well, the result was we chased them clean out of their positions, and are now in possession of them. And say mother, these Rough Riders do fight. We had a forced march heavily loaded with bundles, and almost fagged out, but when they sprung up out of ambush on us we just dumped our bundles and were right in it. Hamilton Fish, Captain Capron, and seven of our men were killed and we had forty wounded. We found Capron within ten feet of the enemy’s line. (He was the light haired officer that spoke to little Jessie.) The whole regiment of Rough Riders are being complimented for their pluck. My troop—“E”—is.especially spoken of as being under a heavy and steady fire for over two hours and not a man wavered, but kept a steady line, and we were being fired on from the front and both sides; in fact we were hemmed in all around for a while. Now, Dear Mother, Jack is all O. K., so far but i’ll tell you I did some tall thinking while it was going on. It was h—1 sure enough. Only that the Spaniards fire high, there would be but very few left to tell the tale. It was awful. The worst was that as we would make a rush -through and throw ourselves on the ground in a firing position, we would either stumble over a dead body or get intoa pool of blood* ; VTBeing under fire is not by any means the worst part of it, because then you have the devil in you and don’t care, only to keep up with the boys, but then i rrk *■ » It rv Vvl A Of! rtn,1 cJi ul O
