Romero Hopes Reno Bout Will Land Salas ReturnA serious-looking young man who packs dynamite in either fist fights in Reno Sunday night, with hopes that the bout will help him climb into a more prominent position in the title picture—either featherweight or lightweight.Out of the ring, you'd hardly tab Jackie Romero as a hard-sockingpug. Well-dressed and wearing horn-rimmed spectacles, he looksmore like a young businessman. In fact, he had trouble convincing the gate-keepers at a recent Reno fight card that he was the main even ter, not trying to crash the gate. In his ring togs, however, he left no doubt. Romero blasted out Willie Price of Salt Lake City in one round!Romero and his manager, Joe La-Bella, of Sacramento, hope that their bouts in Reno will be a springboard for a nationally-rated bout. Jackie is a natural 125 pounder, and he'd like to hook up with Willie Pepor Tommy Collins who are pointing for the intirim title now- that champ Sandy Saddler is in the Army.Jackie also wants another shot at Lauro -Salas, who recently whipped Jimmy Carter for the world’s lightweight championship. A few years ago they staged a ding-dong battle in Sacramento, 10 rounds of action which resulted in Salas’ hand raised for a decision win. But not until the currentworld champ had twice been flooredby the potent-punching Romero. Jackie's handlers claim their mans]?ureceived a broken rib late in the bout, and blame that for his loss.Reno fans know the fighting Rcmeros of Sacramento. Their father, who has been confined to a | wheelchair for the past 20 years, has been near their corner in local bouts since 1936. Tomboy Romero was a fighting lightweight, and brother Elvood was a top-notch bantam. Doth are now retired.Local fans liked what they saw of Jackie on April 26. but they' didn’t get a long look. Jackie sam- 1 pled the Sunday punches of Salt; TClay Court Play Pacod by LarsonLake’s Willie Price and retaliated with a wicked one-tvvp which knocked Price out of the ring. When Willie scrambled up at the count ofnine, he ran into a sleep-producing right to the button.Romero's Reno foe Sunday night may be of sterner calibre. Leo Martinez of Modesto is rated more rugged than Price, as his bouts up and down the San Joaquin Valley attest. And he'll be heavier. The contract call6 for Martinez to make 129 pounds for Romero, and he‘s busy now trying to shave offweight. Lee is a lightweight.The Romero-Martlnez tiff is one of three fine attractions, a triple main event at Moana Park Sunday night. The other eight-rounders involve Moe Macias (Baby MoeMario) against Jimmy Esplritu, andPaul Kaylor against Ernie Woods. A good supporting card is also ontap, and should be witnessed by a fine turnout, judging by early ticket sales at Southworth's, Grand Buffet and Eastside Bar. They're $3.00 ringside, $2.00 reserved, $1.00 general admission, tax extra.
