Patton's Army — in North Africa. Wc were taken to a POW camp in Nebraska. When tbe war in Italy was over, the Italian government decided to collaborate with tbe Allies. The Italian brass told the POWs that we could work with the U-S. Army and be free soldiers once again, or wc could stay in the POW camp until the war was over.It was not a difficult choice for me. I thank Gcd that tbe Americans took me prisoner and brought me over hero. I was sent to Camp Shanks in New York, N Y. I was treated Just like the American soldiers and could come and go whenever my work at the camp was done. While I was there, Ida Sarro and her brother, Tom, gave me a ereat deal of moral support. They lived in Brooklyn, and I spent a lot of time at their house. They are of Italian heritage, and we had a great deal in common.I would like to find these people again and thank them for their kindness.- Oberdsn Tony Mirani.
