£Src1ctIhlia[Under date of June 8, in camp near Cold Harbor, Capt. Rice writes us us fol-ilOWS; ED.J-yFriend Earle—I improve the first spare moment to give you a list of the killed and wounded men in my battery on the first of June and since. On the first day of June we broke camp at daylight, marched in a very hot sun and a suffocating cloud of dust and I arrived at a place called Cold Harbor about one o’clock. After a short rest we were soon formed in line of battle in the rear of four or five other lines. Firing soon commenced with musketry and artillery on both sides ; we lay for an hour or more on the ground and awaited or* i ^ dors, which came at last to advance.— 8 One battalion of our regiment, comprising F, L, K and FI batteries, were ordered to advance ; we did so, facing a bard fire until coming to within a few yards of the! ^ rebel breastworks ; the colonel command- h ing the battalion here baited and the men ncovered themselves as best they could aunder the crest of a bill. Apparentlywe were the only ones making the charge, which was too large a job for so small a tlt;party. We laid here nearly an hour and Atook the fire from both the batteries of Cthe rebels and our own—which proved {iie iually disastrous to us. We were or-! rdered to fall back alter the lapse of one I fahour and did so the best we could ; it nwas here we lost some one hundred fromour battalion ; my battery lost in killed *and wounded 28, have since had wound- ned 1, making 32 in all from my battery kto date, since June 1st. I annex the list. a 9I will try to be more punctual in sending! d you the list of casualties hereafter :KILLED.Sergt. A. V, Priest,Private G. A. Ileatb,c\D44E. M. Marckres,•i44II. Sulham,J44F.
