USS FIDELITY RETURNS The USS Fidelity (MSO 443) steamed into port early this week after a five-month stay at Detyen’s Shipyard, Charleston, S.C., for a general overhaul.Besides engine and generator overhaul, a new habitability package for enlisted berthing compartments was added, mess decks were completely redone and new paneling was installed. The ship also got a new piece of experimental equipment that it will be testing during the next six months for a high-priority Chief of Naval Operations project.During the absence, a number of crew members completed Navy courses and received many hours of Navy training. The crew also put forth extensvie effort, in conjunction with shipyard workers, to complete the overhaul on schedule.The 175-foot long, 35-foot wide Fidelity displaces 850 tons. It has been home ported at NCSC since June 30, 1974, where it serves as a research and development vessel for future equipment designs in the Navy’s mine countermeasures and warfare programs.Fidelity is commanded by LCDR Robert S. Rawls and manned by 66 enlisted men and six officers.A unit of Mine Squadron Twelve and the Naval Surface Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, Fidelity is one of the most modern ships of its class and one of only three active ocean-going minesweepers remaining in the U.S. Navy.
