The society has met annually on or near Washington's birthday for more than 100 years. Francis Sumnicht, president, proposed the Marquette-Joiiet thene recently when the directors met at the Outagamie Bank to plan the program for the annual meeting.“This historic journey into the Indian lands to the Mississippi River is part of Outagamie County history,” Sumnicht stated, “since the two men traveled up the Fox River from Green Bay, actually walking on what today are Kaukauna, Little Chute and Appleton streets when they had to portage their canoe around the various rapids of the Fox River.”The noon luncheon and afternoon program will be open to the public, the society president said. Sumnicht is in charge of luncheon reservations. Directors assisting him include Cecil Furminger, H. H. Helble, Gerald Van Ostrand. Victor Leppla, Mrs. Robert Beyer, Alyce Selipcea and Lillian Mackesy.Efforts are being made to organize Wisconsin community participation in the tercentennial, according to David Meyer, Prairie du Chien, appointed head of a Father Marquette-Joliet Tercentenary committee recently appointed by Gov. Patrick Lucey. The plan is to include more lasting-activities, such as improving the waterways and river fronts along the explorers’ route.Meyer said schools might also participate by providing academic activities centered on the significance of the expedition which was done at the request of the French government to determine if the Mississippi River ran south to the Gulf of Mexico or west the Pacific Ocean.Marquette and Joliet and five other men set out from St. Ignace.
