By Jo-Anne GclgcrIt is hard to forget men like Lee King, Dennis Fleming, John Klump, and John McConnell, not only because they were Orrville boys but because of the role they played in the Viet Nam War. We know these boys as the unfortunate yet heroic four who died in the defense of freedom for a people and land they did not know.Marine PFC John T. Klump was killed on Sept. 24, 1966 while on Operation Prairie at the Rock Pile near the Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam. Only 20 years old at the time, PFC Klump was Orrville’s first casualty. The medals Mr. and Mrs. Ralph T. Klump received in memory of their son, symbolized John’s gallantry and heroism in defense of freedom. The Purple Heart and Purple Heart Cetific-ate, Gallantry Cross with the Palm Military Merit Medal, the Vietnamese Defense Medal, and a service ribbon medal plus an honorable service certificate were sent to the parents and they cherish them as ‘a memory of their son’s death for his country.’ Killed In Ambush
