OLuUl UC xx x « «*the medi?al gentleman who this week visited Mr. Lane: “ I found Mr. Lane in close confinement to his cell, undergoing 48 hours bread and water, inflicted on him in Cork by the deputy-governor for refusing to clean his cell. Mr. Tatir stated that he had not slept since his incarceration (now eight days), that he had no exercise during that period, and had been on bread-and-water six of the eight days. He complained of soreness in the bones snd muscles, and a tired feeling in consequence of the treatment. . . • • The loss of rest,” continues Dr. Hooper’s report, “ deprivation of exercise, and a dietry insufficient to support the vital energies, must rapidly, if persevered in, tell injuriously on his physical and mental system.” .... And, may we ask, what crime he, Mr. Lane, committed to incur this monstrous punishment—murder ? robbery ? outrage ?—no, neither; he simply was guilty of nothing greater than turning a deaf ear to those who were appealing to him to hold his tongue on the Cork scandals^; but he would not; he would do his level best to bring to justice he, whom he believed to be a nasty and foul offender, and for this he is, by Mr. Balfour, treated in the manner Dr. Hooper describes.—:o:—How would it be taken here in England ?—:o:—Again, read this: “In consequence of the civilians who reside pn the Government Island of Fort Westmoreland, in Queenstown Harbour, manifesting their joy at Mr. O’Brien’s release, by lighting tar barrels, the general commanding the Cork military district has served notice on every resident civilian to quit the island. The first eviction, that of a man with a wife and family, was carried out yesterday.” What think ye of this ? If such a piece of news was wired here by Beuter, and from Bussia, even the Tories, I do believe, would cry “shame,” but being done in Ireland and by the Tory Government, we are told by “ cheat Goschen, that it is a glorious government by “ Brave Balfour,” and deserving the confidence of the English people.—:o:—Put Goschen in Lane’s place, under the same circumstances ; I wonder would he then shriek ont “ Good master, brave Balfour ? ”
