The 6th Panzer Army’s 1st SS Division, commanded by Lt. Col. Joachim Pelper, broke through cavalry linking the Americans’ 99th and 106th divisions. The day before attacking gasoline stockpiles and shooting 20 unarmed American soldiers, Peiper’s 2?000-man force gunned down an American artillery convoy at a crossroads near the town. More than 100 Americans were assembled in a field and sprayed with machine gun fire.
