SEVERAL HUNDRED REN III IDLENESS IS MITUnquestionably the order of Fuel Administrator Garfield closing the industries for a period of five days, and the stores, with certain exceptions, for ten consecutive Mondays, is the most drastic yet taken during the war. It makes us realize that tnere is a war on and that we are in it, if nothing else. However, this order should be; received in nothing but the most optimistic light for the reason that if successfully carried out, and there is no reason to doubt otherwise, the coal and traffic situation will be relieved at once; otherwise it would drag along, become worse instead of better, and then a closing order would surely come for a greater length of time with more hardships and a greater loss. With the country short 600,000 tons of coal today, it is estimated that these five days will catch up to the extent of 300J000 tons, and then the balance will be overcome on the ten Mondays. Better do it now and have it over, is the sentiment of * many. Losses of course will be sustained, but we must expect losses; must look for most anything drastic if we are to win the war, which is our job to complete.Several hundred people working in shops in Orrville are idle as the result of the order. Some of the provisions of the order has allowed several of the factories in Orrville to continue operations. The Orrville Milling Co., The Cottage Creamery Co., and Smucker Apple Butter Factory are the factories in Orrville that have not suspended operation. The products 06 these factories are essential for the maintenance of the men in service, all producing foods for the feeding of the American soldiers and allies as well.Business this Monday is practically suspended, and the city is on the desolate order, only grocery stores, meat markets and bakeries being allowed full swing, while the drug stores are allowed to remain open only for the sale of drugs, not even a cigar can be sold at a drug store. The Grand theater will be open this Monday night, but closed on Tuesday nignt; this gives those who are idle a chance for a little amusement. Many of the larger cities are hit harder than Orrville, on account of the big percentage of men employed in shops that are affected by the closing order.
