21 Years LateDistinguished Flying Cross AwardedRecognition was slow in coming.Twenty - one years ago Maj, Lawrence W. Shinniek Jr., then a technical sergeant on a B-17 bomber, performed heroically in action over Germany. Last month he was presented a distinguished flying cross.The presentation was made to Maj. Shinniek, now Tactical Air Command’s Air Force Advisor to the 930th Troop Carrier Group of the 434th TroopCarrier Wing, by Col. Marvin Heath, project officer for re-serves. 838th Air Division, Forbes Air Force Base, Kan. in ceremonies at Bakalar Air Force Base, near Columbus, Ind.Major Shinniek was recommended for the DFC for distinguished heroism while participating, as a technical sergeant,in an aerial flight as a radio operator - gunner on a B-17 of the 774th Bomb Squadron, on a bombing mission against German oil fields near Blecham-mer, Germany, on July 7, 1944. On that date Shinniek’s aircraft was seriously damaged by rocket fire from attacking fighter aircraft. One crew member was killed and Shinniek was severely wounded.
