OCK, LUBBOCK COUNTY, TEXAS, TUESDAY, JANUARY 17,Allen Brothers Post American Legion Held Third Annual Meeting Thursday*, Night and Elected Officers jfof YearThe American Legion met Thursday night at 7:30 in the Justice of Peace Court Room in their third annual meeting- for the election of officers. Few people have an idea of just what this organization stands for, its purposes and what it accomplishes in its regular activities. A summary of the report that Adjutpnt Hall made before the Thursday night meeting included, among many other things, the following activities:Mailed out 1550 circular letters and notices; received and answered more than 100 letters; conducted club rooms for six months with all of the comforts of a club for the Ex-Service men; assisted four Ex-Service men to secure compensation for wounds received during the war; working through Senator Morris Sheppard, secured the six-inch field piece that stands upon the Court House lawn; put on home talent show that was the best thing in the year of its kind; conducted four boxing bouts, drawing several hundred out of town folks into Lubbock for each of them; conducted the second successful Lyceum Course, bringing six excellent numbers to this city for the winter season; conducted two full military funerals in honor of Ex-1 Service men who gave their lives during the late war, and observed all National holidays in a manner fitting to the honor of our country; assisted the Chamber of Commerce and Retail Merchants Association in arranging a definite closing agreement for the coming years and otherwise kept alive the spirit of fellowship and service that was born during the late war.In addition to these more serious duties of the organization, a lot of fun and good fellowship was enjoyed by the Ex-Sorviee men from all over this section. A number of meetings have been held with a lot of fun and frolic mixed with the business and the Thursday night meeting was a leader along this line. The American Legion is the largest single organization in the entire world today, outside of political organizations. Its membership is restricted to boni fide Ex-Service men from the Army, Navy or Marine Corps or recognized nurses in the Army between the dates of April flth, 1 f) 17 and November 11, 1918. The organization is pledged to be non-political except for the protection of the principles of democracyand honor in and for our government along the lines detailed in the ideals that brought on the kite war and forwhich America stood. Its greatest fight of today is for adequate accommodation for the incapacitated Ex-Service men over our country and they recognize the American Red Cross as the greatest single agency of assistance to them in this work. In this little section of the country the Legion and the Red Gross working together, has been in-; strumental in assisting more than fiffchy Ex-Service men get the attention and allotment money they were entitled to by virture of their handicap received during the war.The passing years will develop a greater appreciation of the ideals of the late war and of the Legion—as has been the case in every war that history records. Ex-Service men as a whole were reluctant to take part in anything that reminded them of the ast war and as a result the Legion ias had n hard time getting estab-ished, generally speaking. But as ;he years pass and a growing appreciation of just what it stands for and is attempting to do developed it- is destined to become one of the greatest factors for the good of the nation that we have ever had.At the meetings, prior to Thursday night, the- dues were reduced from $G to $3 per year and every Ex-Service man in this section should become actively connected with the organization. In unity there is strength, and it is only through a closer association of the men who uphold the principles of democracy and right that the ideals of this war can be realized and justice done to those who suffered material handicaps and losses as a result of the war.If you are a Ex-Service man, see Adjutant Hall, at Davidson’s Grain store and get lined up with the bunch. You will do' good and have enough fun to pay for your trouble. The following officers were elected for the coming year:Post Commander, Curtis A. Keen; Vice-Commanders, M. M. Mitchell, and R. L.
