The National Football League was the first sports organization to send a group to Vietnam in 1966.First In 1966“Pro football is very pleased to cooperate again with the USQ and the Department of Defense in sending a group of flayers on a goodwill visit to American servicemen in the Far East,” Rozelle said. “The NFL was the first to do so in 1966 and we intend to continue to send groups for. as long as needed.”The South Vietnam groups include:Group 1—Tackle John Brown of the Pittsburgh Steelers, defensive back Butch Byrd of the Buffalo Bills, running back Tom Woodeshick of the Philadelphia Eagles, tight end Jerry Smith of the Washington Redskins, center Fred Hoagiin of the Cleveland Browns and tackle George Kunz of the Atlanta Falcons.Group 2—Running back Clint Jones of the Minnesota Vikings, guard Joe Scibelli of the Los Angeles Rams, running back Larry Csonka of the Miami Dolphins, center Jon Morris of the Boston Patriots, quarterback Greg Landry of the Detroit Lions and Bill Granholm, special assistant to Rozelle.The group making the Pacific hospitals tour includes Curtis, Lilly, kicker Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints, tackle Ernie Wright of the Cincinnati Ben-gals, defensive back Lem Barney of the Detroit Lions and running hack Tom Matte of the Baltimore Colts.
