Evidently the Stockton plantation was in the path of General Sherman's March to the Sea. Cloreece relates this family story about the event: Florence, * the Stockton's daughter and Cloreece's greatgrandmother, was just a young girl of 8 or 9. She remembered that her mother had only ' recently completed the quilt when a rider came telling them that the Union soliders were on the way and for them to get their I valuables together and leave because the soldiers were burning everything in sight.; Florence, years later, told that i the family hid the new quilt in an old washpot, buried in the f ground. In the wake of the i soliders’ march, the two story home was burned. What few things the family had taken with them or hidden were all that was. saved.
