Steve Lang. 36. of 11732 Stewart, beat cfT atfcfcs of two German panzer battalions during the Nazi drive against Luxembourg city, preventing for three days the Nazi capture of the town of Ber-dorf. was related in a press dispatch last week.A large number of enemy tanks destroyed and 35Q Germans killed is the score that Capt. Lang s tanks, infantry and engineers piled up in their battle with the Nazis. The captain's losses were four killed. 20 wounded, one medium tank and four half-tracks. The Americans capped their epic stand by withdrawing under the direction of Capt. Lang without the loss of a single man.Plant Rooby TrapsBefore withdrawing, however, they booby trapped the town to delay the enemy and permit the arrival of reiief forces to prevent a further German advance.The armored units under Lang entered Berdorf Dec. 18. where thev joined elements of two companies of the 12th regiment. 4th infantry division. Ordered to hold the town at whatever cost, they drove off German columns Ihe night of Dec. 19 by artillery fire. During the morning of the 21st the Germans attacked under a heavy artillery fire from three sides of the embattled Yanks and again were driven back. Three more attacks of the Germans were repulsed before Lang received orders to withdraw, which they did! under cover of darkness.Started as PrivateCapt. Lang, who started out as a buck private, commands two platoons of tanks, two platoons of armored infantry, two undersized companies of foot infantry, and a squad of engineers. He was recommended for officers' candidate school by Gen. Patton at Port Knox. Ky. He received his basic training at Port Benning. Ga. Capt.
