LETTERSEditorAnniston Star 1I have Just received a copy of your ; editorial entitled Gains In Mem- j bershlp, printed In the December] 20 issue of The Anniston Star, in ■ which you refer to gains in member- j ship or The American Legion and * Veterans of Forc5gn Wars. You ask I the questions “Do the veterans of j this war have a preference at this | time for the V. F. W. organization? ; Or does it mean that the V. F. W. is just now beginning really to draw in il* eligible membership?”The answers to those questions are, first, that the Veterans of Foreign Wars is permitted to enroll men and women of World War II who serve outside the continental' limits of the United States as members while such men and women are still in the armed forces of our nation, The American Legion is truly a civilian organization and by action of Its Twenty-Fourth Annual National Convention and through the amendment to Its Congressional charter on October 2D, 1942, made eligible for membership in the organization men and women who ' served honorably in the armed forces of the United States during World War II after they have returned to civilian life, or in the event they remain in the service after the cessation of hostilities. Therefore, we cannot conduct an intensive membership campaign at this time among the men and women in uniform. Furthermore, it is our opinion that these fighters of ours liavc a big enough job to do aL the present time to win the war, without being bothered with any type of membership solicitation campaign until ; they return to civilian life.From the men and women already discharged from service in World War II, The American Legion nationally has enrolled approximately 100,000 members.We have a National World War II Liaison Committee, which was created by action of our Twenty-Fourth Annual National Convention and was organized a year ago. The duties of this committee are as follows:1. To formulate the policy of maintaining a constructive relationship between The American Legion and the men and women serving In World War, It.2. To formulate plans for maintaining contact with those honorably separated from World War II.3. To formulate plans to acquaintthe families of the men and women of World War II of the many services available to them through The American Legion.! Legionnaires throughout the United Stales are hard at work In various phases of war effort, and we are continuing to serve those in the armed forces in many and various ways.Sincerely your*,c.
