Her arrival accounts for all the Pan-American planes caught in the Pacific war, the only casualty being the Clipper, which was destroyed at Hongkong. The emergency flighttook 22 days overall, with 12 flying days.The resumption of the San Francisco to Auckland service is regardedas l emote.The Pacific Clipper was in command ofCaptain Robert Ford, a flying boat expert of world-v, ide experience. Before being transferred by Pan-American Atr-\\ ays to the Pacific section. Captain Ford had been captain of Clippers crossing the Atlantic to Lisbon and prior to that bad been in. the company's South Americanservice.The Pacific Clipper was in New Zealand when Japan declared war on the United States and Captain Ford was ordered to return by a round-the-world route without passengers, as he was unable to make use of Honolulu on his way home. The Clipper was stripped of some of her passenger accommodation in Auckland in order to make room for additional petrol supplies for the longer “hops.” The first port of call was Noumea to evacuate 15 members of Pan-American Airways Staff.
