More appreciative audiences could not be expected.a Political Meeting*.—At a meeting held at Camp Casey, Va., on the evening of the 24th of December, 18t4, by the men and olllcers of companies A, 13, C and D stationed at this camp on detached service, and of which Henry lt;4. Spears, was President, and William M’Cowen Secretary, the following preamble and resolutions were offered:Whereas, A petition has been prepared by the Israel Lyceum, Washington, P. O., Thus. 11. O. Hinton President, to be submitted to General Bingham and through him to Hon. Charles Sumner, praying the Congress of the United States to confer upon the colored people of America, the right of Elective Franchise;Resolved, That in the judgment of this meeting, I lie said petition is objectionable, because Congress has not the constitutional power to decide what class of persons shall or shall not exercise the right of suffrage in the States.Resolved, That in view of the important and valuable services rendered to the United States Government by the bravo colored soldiers, in crushing this gigantic rebellion, eacli State should grant to its colored population equalrights.Resolved, That we fully endorse and most heartily approve the following noble sentiments contained in the petition referred to, to-wit:— “ Wo do not think that the Almighty has poured the tide of life through our breasts, animating us with a portion of His own spirit; and at the same time struck us off the list of rational beings.” Resolved, That the colored soldiers have proven by lheir patriotism and heroic bravery upon the numerous battlefields of the present war that they are entitled to, and should bo permitted to exercise, the right of holding commissioned offices in the army.The preamble and first resolution were discussed and adopted. Rav. J. R. Johnson, S. H.Smothers, C. P. Clemens and Captains Lufkin, Cutts and O’Brien, and Lieut. William P. Roberts, spoke in favor of the second resolution.— The meeting adjourned to meet ou next Saturday evening at (I P. M.Rev. J. It. Johnson, assisted by Rev. C. P. Clemens, of Co. A., 45th U. S. C. T., and Corp’l Lemuel Stokes, of Co. C., are doing much good in the moral and religious improvement of the men.
