Training At RitchieOutlined By SpeakerVeteran Officer Addresses Kiwanis Club On ThursdayTuRoIwaCllrSOI\\rcJeiBaMiNisKliOhliemeRa!nrilielieteiceiSome ot the training given soldiers at nearby Camp Ritchie during the last war was explained by Major Edward Caskey at the weekly hincheou-meetng or the Hagerstown Kiwanis Club heldyesterday at Hotel Alexander.. Major Caskey served as a psclio-logical warfare officer ot the Ninth Army iu Europe. He went overseas in 1943. He is holder of the French military decoration ol croix de .guerre and also has the American bronze star award. He was introduced by Wilson R.% 9Caskey, this city, connected with j ' the Caskey Baking Co., who is a j Sn member of the public affairs com- I Ha mittee of the club.The speaker told about training given men of various nationalities at Camp Ritchie and commented on tho warm welcome given Camp Ritchie soldiers in Hagerstown when they visited here on weekends and on leaves.He said the men at Ritchie were trained to secure information of great value to the Army, such as nature of enemy terrain, weather conditions, combat positions and other facts. He said the information had to be reliable or it was of no value and might result in serious consequences if not correct.The speaker said no one man could get all the information required, so many men were specially trained for the work, becoming •experts along certain lines which included photo interpretation, aerial photography and counterintelligence work. The latter was aimed to keep the enemy from securing information concerning the Allied plans.* Some were trained in combat psychology or use of propaganda during the war. The speaker mentioned the earliest records of propaganda used in warfare and went 0[ back to the days of Gideon in the tfc Bible. He said this training was ^ responsible lor saving ot many lives. ’ R.
